Shorted out my own welder in Tulsa, but was it my fault or the machine's?
Last Tuesday I was running a bead on a 2-inch carbon steel pipe at the refinery outside Tulsa, and my Lincoln 350MP suddenly started spitting and then just died. I checked the leads, the breaker, even pulled the cover to look at the boards, but I found a worn spot in the ground cable where it rubbed against a scaffold rail, so I patched it with electrical tape and it fired right back up. But here's the thing: a buddy of mine says it was my fault for not using a proper cable protector, while another guy swears that cable just wears out after about 400 hours of use no matter what you do. So who's wrong here, me for the sloppy setup or the company for not replacing that cable sooner, and has anyone else had a machine short out on them in a spot you didn't expect?
