Pro tip: teach new players with a broken rule on purpose, it backfired

Last game night I let my cousin win a practice round of Catan by ignoring the robber rule, thinking it would ease him in, but now he argues every game that's how it's supposed to work. On the flip side, my buddy insists that house rules like this are the only way to hook beginners without overwhelming them. Has anyone else tried this shortcut, or do you stick to the manual no matter how new the player is?
