My buddy swore I was shuffling my deck wrong for 2 years and he was right

So my friend Dave, who runs a local game store in Portland, kept telling me I was doing a mash shuffle wrong. I thought he was just being picky lol. I always did the standard riffle but he said I was bending the cards too much and damaging the edges. I ignored him for like 2 years honestly. Last week I finally watched a YouTube video he sent and realized I was basically peeling the cards instead of sliding them together. I tried his method with a cheap deck of Bicycle cards and now they actually last longer than 10 games. Has anyone else had a friend give them advice that they brushed off forever until it finally clicked?

Oh man, that's exactly the kind of thing that happens to all of us eventually. The weird part is how long we stick with a bad habit just because learning the right way feels like too much work at first. I had the same thing with how I held my golf club for years before someone finally showed me the right grip. Now I can't believe I was messing it up for so long. Your friend Dave probably knew what he was talking about from the start since he runs a store and sees people wrecking cards all day.

Idk, I actually think sometimes people overthink this stuff. Maybe sticking with a bad habit isn't so terrible if it works for you most of the time. I've seen plenty of folks who shuffle cards or hold golf clubs in weird ways and they do just fine, sometimes even better than the "proper" technique. Learning the "right" way can mess with your natural flow and make you second-guess every move. Plus, people like Dave might just be pushing what works for them, not necessarily what's best for everyone else. A little bad habit isn't the end of the world if you're still getting the job done.
