Saw a working forge at the county fair in Kalispell last weekend

There was a guy doing live demos with a coal forge and a hand crank blower, and he had maybe 20 people crowded around watching him draw out a bottle opener. I noticed he kept his anvil on a stump wrapped in chain, and when I asked him about it he said it cuts the ring down by half. Anyone here tried the chain trick, and does it really make that much of a difference?
