My old shop teacher said never quench 1084 in water, and I ignored him for 6 months
He told me back in 2019 that water quenching 1084 would crack every blade, but I figured he was just being careful and kept doing it because the hamon looked so sharp. Lost four blades in a row to hairline cracks before I switched to parks 50 and now I get the same look without the heartbreak. Anybody else had to eat crow on advice from an old timer, or am I the only one who had to waste good steel to learn?
