My fire pot burned a half moon hole in the bottom and I patched it with a scrap of 3/16 plate
My coal forge fire pot gave out on me Saturday morning about 20 minutes into a batch of hooks, and I watched a bright orange line creep across the bottom of the pot. The plate down there had worn to maybe 1/16 thick from a few winters of raking clinker out, and it finally split along the grate slot. I dumped the coal, let it cool, and cut a patch out of a scrap of 3/16 plate I had leaning by the door, then ground the pot down to bare metal and burned the patch in with 6011. Took me about an hour and a half all in, and it held heat fine on the next fire. The lesson I took away is that the bottom of a fire pot eats itself way faster than the sides do, so now I check it with a punch every couple weeks instead of just looking at it. Has anyone else patched a fire pot like this, and how long did your fix hold up before you just bought a new one?
