Used to skip British crime dramas until a friend in London pushed me
For years I thought British crime shows were too slow and talky. A buddy from London sat me down last month and made me watch the first episode of Broadchurch. He told me to stick with it for three episodes before judging. By episode two I was hooked on the pacing and how every character matters. Anyone else had a show they wrote off until someone forced them to watch it?

Gotta say, it was The Wire for me. Everyone kept telling me it was the best show ever made but I watched the first two episodes and thought it was boring and confusing. My cousin made me promise to watch all of season one before giving up on it. By the time I got to the fourth episode where they start putting the pieces together on the street vs the courthouse, I realized I was watching something special. The slow build is actually what makes it so good because you learn the characters and the system at the same time.

Broadchurch was exactly that for me too. Used to swear off anything British because I thought it was all stiff upper lip and slow walking through fog. Then my sister forced me to watch the first three episodes of Happy Valley one night. By the time the credits rolled on episode three I was texting her asking when season two came out. The thing is, those shows aren't slow for no reason. Every scene builds something. Every conversation matters later. Now I'm the one telling everyone to give British crime dramas a real chance because the payoff is worth the setup.
