Rant: Quit greasing cotter pins on old French bikes, dry fit works better
Pulled apart a 1970s Peugeot last month and the cotter pins were so greased up they kept sliding out of the crank arm when I tried to seat them. A guy at the co-op in Minneapolis told me to clean both the pin and the hole with alcohol and press them in dry, then torque the nut down to about 15 ft-lbs. Did that on three bikes since and they have not backed out once, even after 200 miles of city riding. Anyone else notice grease actually makes these worse, or am I just lucky so far?
