Dropped $180 on a Park Tool wheel truing stand and honestly I regret it
I've been building wheels for about 12 years now, and everyone kept saying you need a legit truing stand if you're serious. So last spring I finally bought one, the TS-2.2, right around $180 with tax. Here's the thing: for 90 percent of what I do, my old homemade stand made from a bent fork and a zip tie worked just as good. The Park Tool is nice, sure, but it didn't magically make my wheels rounder or my dish more accurate. Anyone else feel like the fancy tools get overhyped once you actually know what you're doing?
Buddy of mine runs a shop and bought the same stand, used it twice, then went right back to his ancient homemade setup. Said the Park just sat there collecting dust while he kept reaching for the bent fork thing he'd been using since like 2009. He ended up selling it to a new guy for $120 and put the money toward spokes. Tool doesn't build the wheel, your hands do.
