My buddy heard my drum loop demo in 2019 and told me to lean into the beeps instead of hiding them
I used to bury all the clunky drum machine sounds under reverb and layers because I thought they sounded cheap. A friend who builds pedals out in Tempe heard one of my tracks on a burned CD and said flat out, "the beeps are the good part, quit hiding them." I fought him on it for a bit but then tried a track with nothing but a busted CR-78 loop and a bass note. Took me 3 tries to get it sloppy enough to be fun. Now that old clank is the whole sound. What cheap gear noise did you used to hide that you ended up keeping front and center?
Wait, your friend heard it on a burned CD in Tempe and that was enough for him to call it? That part gets me. I had a beat up DR-55 that I taped over the volume knob cause it hissed so bad, and now I run it through a cheap preamp just to make it hiss louder on purpose. Three tries to get it sloppy enough is so real though, that is the hard part.
