Showerthought: my brother in law said he quit a 400 page web serial at chapter 3, and I think most people read slow burns wrong
He told me over coffee in Lansing that if a story doesn't grab him in 10 minutes he's out, and he's dropped 6 books this year doing it. I said fine, but you are not reading a slow burn, you are reading a short story and getting mad it isn't one. The good ones are not slow because the writer is lazy, they are slow because the payoff needs 40 chapters of setup to land. There is a fan serial I follow that took 22 chapters before the main two characters even spoke to each other, and chapter 50 hit so hard I had to put my phone down. Reading that thing in one sitting would ruin it, it only works if you let it pile up in your head between chapters. So here is my question, do you pace yourself on long stories or do you binge and judge the whole thing in one night?
