Got conned into a 900 chapter fanfic that only updates twice a year and I want my 4 months back
Four months ago a guy in a Discord server for book recs sent me a link and said "trust me, the slow burn pays off." I read 612 chapters in 16 weeks, which averages out to about 5 chapters a night, and the two main characters still haven't held hands. The author posts one new chapter every 6 months if we're lucky, so I'm now stuck in a story that moves slower than my grandma's dial up. The worst part is I got my sister hooked too, so we both sit around waiting for updates that never come. Anyone else been burned by a rec from a stranger who swore the payoff was coming? And how do you tell if a story is actually slow burn or just plain stuck?
Been there and it HURTS. I got suckered into one with 400 chapters where the "big reunion" happened off screen and the author went on hiatus three chapters later to "focus on her candle business." Every couple months the discord mods would hype up "guys the next arc is gonna be huge" and it never was. Now I check the last update date before I read anything, and if the gap is more than 3 months I'm out. Real slow burn at least gives you little crumbs, like they share a blanket or one of them stares too long. If nothing happens for 200 chapters that's not a slow burn, that's a parked car. Tell your sister to start a support group because you're both stuck now.
