Appreciation post: my coworker spent 40 minutes explaining why the first 200 pages of that shipwreck book are worth it
I was grumbling at lunch on Tuesday about a book I quit 150 pages in, and my coworker Rosa just smiled and said the good part does not start until the lifeboat, which is around page 220. She read the whole 600 page thing twice and swears the slow setup is the point because you need to know every guy on that crew before the storm hits. So I picked it back up over the weekend and she was right, I hit the lifeboat chapter Sunday night and could not put it down after that. Now I want to know what other books earn their slow start, what is the longest payoff you folks have sat through?

Wait, are we talking about the same shipwreck book, because the lifeboat part is way later than page 220 in the one I read. Maybe there are two of them, or maybe your version is shorter.
