Spent 45 minutes on a ladder comparing two smoke detectors, the cheap one won big time

I replaced the units in my hallway last Tuesday in Austin and ran the test button on both, the $18 generic brand from the hardware aisle beside my register went off louder and faster than the $45 name brand I grabbed online. Honestly thought the expensive one would be better because it had that smart app stuff, but it just sat there blinking for 6 seconds before it even chirped. Anyone else notice the budget gear outperforms the fancy stuff with more features?

Yeah, the "blinking for 6 seconds" part got me. I've got a similar setup, spent way too much on one that connects to my phone and talks to me, meanwhile the $15 beeper from the gas station down the road is the one that actually wakes me up when I burn toast. Guess my money went to the alarm's feelings, not its lungs. My smart one probably needs a firmware update to be loud, which says everything about modern tech.
