I clicked a random link about city trees cooling streets and now I own a $12 thermometer
Last Tuesday I was killing time on a link dump and saw a story about how trees in Milwaukee drop street temps by like 6 degrees. I didn't believe it so I grabbed a cheap thermometer off the shelf, walked to the same block twice, once under a maple and once in full sun. The sun spot hit 97 but under the tree it read 84. Now I am that guy measuring sidewalks, and I kind of want to map my whole block. Has anyone else tried this, and does it work the same on a cloudy day?
Watched my neighbor do the same thing last summer after reading some article. He got a thermometer and checked spots around his yard for a week straight, map and all. On cloudy days he said the shade still ran cooler but only by 2 or 3 degrees instead of 6 or 8. The gap shrinks when the sun is not beating down, but trees still win.
