Spent 5 hours trying to play a VHS I found at Goodwill in Portland, the tracking knob was the whole problem

I picked up an unlabeled tape at the Goodwill on 82nd for $1.50 and my player kept spitting out static until I realized the tracking needed adjusting frame by frame. What made it worse was that I cleaned the heads twice before reading the player manual, which wasted most of the afternoon. Has anyone else had a tape that looked dead until they messed with the tracking, and was it worth what was on it?
