Found a 1994 camcorder tape at a Goodwill in Spokane and the bootleg trick on it actually worked
I picked up a box of old VHS-C tapes at a Goodwill in Spokane for $4 and one of them had a home recording of some guy dubbing movies off his TV, complete with a running commentary. About halfway in he starts explaining how to beat the macrovision copy protection by running the signal through an old audio receiver first, basically daisy chaining it so the sync pulses get messed up. I had a stack of tapes from my parents' house that always came out with that weird brightness pulsing when I tried to copy them, and I figured what the heck, worth a shot. Took me 3 tries to get the cables right and I honestly felt like a mad scientist with RCA cords all over my living room floor. The kicker is it worked, the copies came out clean with no pulsing at all. Blew my mind that a random stranger on a tape from 30 years ago gave me a better tip than any forum I'd read. Did anyone else ever run into these old home dubbing tutorials and actually try them?
