Vent: the swap meet guy in Tucson sold me a $5 tape player that eats tapes
Bought a little portable cassette player at the Tanque Verde swap meet for 5 bucks, mostly for laughs, and it chewed up my one good mixtape from 1994 before the first chorus. Now I only run it with a junk tape to test the reels, but I'd love to know if anyone has actually fixed one of these or if they all just munch tapes forever.
Those cheap players almost always need a new belt and a good cleaning, the old grease turns to glue and the reels drag. Nine times out of ten the tape getting eaten is just the take up reel not spinning right. Pop the back off and look at the belt, if it's stretched or melted that's your problem. A $3 belt and some rubbing alcohol on the pinch roller can bring it back to life.
