Vent: my $7 Goodwill scanner still scans better than my phone for old water-damaged photos
Everyone keeps telling me to just use my phone for old family pics, but phone cameras blow out the faded edges on water-damaged prints. I picked up a beat up Canon CanoScan at the Goodwill on 4th Ave in Tucson 2 years ago for $7, and the flatbed with a plain white sheet on top catches detail my phone flattens out. I know because I scanned the same 1987 photo of my grandma both ways and the scanner kept the cracked corner texture. What do you all use for old prints that are already yellowed and spotty?

I mean, that 1987 scan could just come down to your phone's auto processing being turned on, not the scanner being magic. Most phones crank contrast and sharpness by default, which is exactly what kills faded edges on old prints. If you go into your camera settings and turn off HDR and any auto enhance stuff, then shoot in raw under even light, you'd probably get way closer than you think. Also worth saying a $7 thrift scanner can have a gross platen or a tired lamp that adds weird color shifts you might be reading as "texture.
