Watched a guy ask for a fade with a photo of a completely different dude, and it changed how I run my chair
Last Tuesday at my shop in Reno, a guy sits down and shows me a photo of some soccer player with a skin fade, then says "just make it look natural." I start blending and he keeps saying "shorter" every 30 seconds, so I take him down to a 0.5 guard and he finally goes "whoa, too short." That's when I figured out the real problem: he wasn't looking at the photo, he was looking at his own head in the mirror the whole time. Now I hand every client a mirror before I even pick up the clippers and ask them to point at what they don't like. It sounds dumb but I've had zero "too short" complaints in 3 months. How do you all handle the guys who just say shorter on repeat?

Handing them a mirror first sounds smart but it kind of misses the real issue. Guys saying shorter on repeat usually aren't confused about the photo, they just panic once the clippers start buzzing and want to feel like they're in charge of something. Half the time they don't even know what a 0.5 guard means, they just hear the number and freak. I've had better luck just stopping, putting the clippers down, and making them tell me what number they actually want before I touch anything. If they can't answer that, that's on them, not me. Your three months of no complaints might just be luck or a shop full of polite dudes.
