The old barber on Main in Boise told me to stop gripping my clippers like a hammer, and my wrist pain vanished in 2 weeks
I was at a chair rental shop on Main Street in Boise back in March, and this guy who has been cutting for 34 years watched me do a fade for about 10 minutes without saying a word. After the client left he grabbed my clipper and showed me how he holds it, with the pinky and ring finger doing the work instead of the whole hand clamped down like I was swinging a hammer. I tried it on my next 3 clients and by the end of the week my wrist stopped aching for the first time in 6 months. It felt slow and weird at first, like holding a pencil with the wrong end, but the control on my taper lever actually got better. Any of you deal with wrist or forearm pain from gripping too hard, and did switching your grip fix it or just move the sore spot somewhere else?
34 years of cutting and the dude just sat there watching you like a hawk for 10 minutes? That's some serious barber Yoda energy right there. But hey, if holding your clippers like a pencil instead of a sledgehammer saves your wrist, I'd say that old dude earned his free lesson.
