Serious question, does anyone else miss the old barber supply shop on 5th that closed down?
I walked past the spot on 5th Street where Ray's Barber Supply used to be, and now it's a vape shop with those neon signs in the window. I mean, I used to go in there every couple weeks for clippers and shave cream, and Ray would always let me test the new stuff before buying. Last month I tried to find a decent pair of scissors in person and every place around here just points me to some website. Maybe it's just me, but there was something about holding a tool in your hand before you dropped $80 on it. Does anyone know a shop within an hour of here that still lets you look at the tools in person?
Took me three weekends of driving around to find anything close to what Ray had. There was a spot in the next town over called Bill's Clipper Corner, real hole in the wall, and the guy behind the counter actually handed me four different pairs of shears to try on a practice pad he kept right there. Spent forty minutes just feeling the weight and testing the tension, and he never once pushed me toward the expensive ones. That whole thing is gone now, though. Bill retired two years back and his nephew turned it into a phone repair kiosk. The problem is these websites show you a picture and a star rating, but you can't feel if the grip sits right in your palm or if the blade catches when you close it. Half the stuff I bought online ended up in a drawer because it felt wrong the second I opened the box.
