The guy at the parts counter said "it's just two wires" and I believed him
Was picking up a replacement switch for my shop light at a hardware store in Boise when the guy behind the counter looked at my burnt old one and said, "it's just two wires, you can't mess it up." Got home, wired it up hot without killing the breaker first because I figured it was simple, and got a nice little zap that threw my arm back into a shelf of paint cans. Turns out the switch wasn't the problem, the outlet had a loose neutral the whole time, so I spent $12 on a switch I didn't need and a bruise on my elbow. Now I test everything with a $9 voltage pen before I touch a single wire. Anyone else have a "simple" fix turn into a whole afternoon?
