My kid's science fair volcano taught me more about bad wiring than any job site
So my son had a science fair at Jefferson Middle School last month and he wanted to build one of those baking soda volcanoes with a little light inside that glowed red. Simple, right? I grabbed some wire from the truck and we twisted the ends onto a 9 volt battery and a little bulb, and nothing happened. I figured the bulb was dead so we swapped it and still nothing. Then my kid looks at me and says, dad, you put both wires on the same side of the battery. I had been doing this stuff for 22 years and I just stared at it. I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the kitchen floor. We flipped one wire and the thing lit up first try. It got me thinking about how we teach wiring. Maybe the best way to learn is to just mess it up with a kid watching. Has anyone else had a dumb mistake like that come from their own kid?
