My electrician buddy said those cheap plug in surge protectors were worthless, so I tested one on my garage freezer for a year
I always figured a $12 power strip was basically the same as those $60 surge protectors, just with a fancy light on it. My buddy Dave has been an electrician in Akron for 19 years and he kept telling me the cheap ones do almost nothing, so I finally unplugged the strip feeding my chest freezer and put one of those single outlet surge jobs on it instead. Here is the part that got me. About 7 months in, we had a bad storm and a tree took out a line down the street, and when the power came back there was a surge that fried my neighbor's garage fridge and his microwave clock. My freezer just kept humming along and the little light on the protector was dead, which means it did its one job and gave up. I opened the cheap strip I used to run and there was basically nothing inside but three bits of metal and a switch. So now I want to know, has anyone actually had one of these things save a fridge or a TV, or did I just get lucky with timing?
