My 3 year old smart plug melted because I plugged a space heater into it
Last month I was messing around with my desk setup in my apartment in Austin. I had this cheap smart plug I got for like $12 off Amazon, and I thought I was being clever by plugging my space heater into it so I could turn it on from my phone before I got out of bed. Well, one morning I woke up to a burning smell and the plug was all melted and black. The heater had been running for like 3 hours straight and the plug just could not handle the power draw. I unplugged everything and somehow did not burn my place down. I opened up the plug and the wires inside were totally fried, like the insulation had completely melted off. Now I am scared to use any smart plug with anything that pulls real power. Has anyone else had a close call with a cheap smart plug and a high wattage appliance?

Switched to a heavy duty plug rated for 15 amps after my cheap one got warm with a heater on it, and that fixed it for me. The box should list the max watts, so just check that the heater number fits under it before plugging in.
