I swore off soldering in the garage after the smoke alarm went off twice, but a guy at the Dayton makerspace last Saturday got me back on the iron
He pointed out my $12 fume fan was the real problem, not the soldering, so I bought one and now I actually finish projects instead of abandoning them at the wire-stripping stage, has anyone else blamed the wrong tool for a bad habit?
That bit about abandoning projects "at the wire-stripping stage" hit way too close to home. I spent two years convinced my problem was that I needed a better iron, so I bought one, and then another one, and somehow the projects still sat there. Turns out my real issue was that I was trying to solder in a room with zero light and no way to hold the board still, which is basically blaming the hammer when you're trying to drive a screw. My bench has a lamp and a little vise now and suddenly I can actually get stuff done, which makes me feel a little dumb about all that money I threw at irons.
