Had to choose between a $20 multimeter and a $100 Fluke for testing an old house

I went cheap because I figured it's just for checking outlets, and the thing gave me a false reading that almost made me wire a 240v line into a 120v socket. Has anyone else gotten burned by trusting a budget tool when you really needed the real deal?

Cheap multimeters can kill you man, that false reading could've fried your whole panel.
