A $3 multimeter beat my $40 one at finding a short in a wall, and I only found out after 2 hours of guessing.
Two weeks ago I was wiring a new outlet in my garage in Akron and kept tripping the breaker. My $40 Klein multimeter read 120V on the hot wire, so I figured the outlet was live. I poked around for almost 2 hours, checking every connection twice. Then my buddy handed me his cheap $3 Harbor Freight meter. It showed zero volts on the same wire. Turns out my fancy meter had a blown fuse inside from an earlier job and was giving me a false reading. I swapped the fuse and it worked fine. So the $3 meter saved me from tearing open a wall for no reason. Has anyone else had a tool lie to their face like that?

Man, that false reading stuff is the worst (had a similar thing happen with a dead battery in my tester once) and it always seems to happen right when you're already frustrated. Glad your buddy's cheap meter caught it before you tore into the drywall.
