I used to laugh at people who said the Segway would replace walking, then I watched a guy in Seattle eat it on a curb
Back in 2005 I read an article that said Segways would be as common as cell phones by 2015. I actually believed it for a while and even defended the idea to my brother. Last week I was in Seattle and saw a guy on one of those old tours wipe out on a curb, and the whole group just stood there. That was the moment I realized how wrong those old predictions were. Anyone else have a moment where a bad tech prediction finally clicked for you?
I remember reading a Wired piece years back that swore up and down we'd all be zipping around on Segways by now, and the guy who wrote it was dead serious. There was even that whole "IT" hype from Steve Jobs calling it bigger than the PC, which looks hilarious in hindsight. What nobody counted on was that people just didn't want to stand on a stick in public, and cities never built anything for them. The Seattle wipeout thing tracks though, those tour groups always look one bump away from disaster. Bad predictions like that stick with you because the tech world keeps making the same kind of bet over and over.
