Folded my transit map wrong for 2 years, GPS ruined my commute

I always thought the paper bus map for downtown Portland was just badly designed, so I kept using my phone GPS and getting routed through construction zones. Then last week I dropped my backpack and the map unfolded the other way, and I realized I had been reading it upside down the whole time. The north arrow was tiny and the fold lines tricked me, so every transfer I planned was actually the reverse route. I wasted like 30 minutes a day for 2 years because of a stupid fold crease. Now I feel dumb but also kind of mad at the map maker for not labeling the top in huge letters. Has anyone else had a map layout that was so bad it broke your whole sense of direction? What did you use instead?
