Sunrise hikes are overrated, I finally switched to late afternoon starts

I used to plan every trip around catching sunrise from the peak. Last month on the Eagle Creek trail in Oregon, I dragged everyone up at 4am and we got fogged in with zero views. A ranger at the trailhead told me the afternoon light is way better for photos anyway because the shadows make the canyon pop. We went back the next day at 2pm and saw way more wildlife, plus the trail was almost empty since everyone else did the sunrise thing. Now I aim for starting 3 to 4 hours before sunset, which also means I dont blind myself hiking downhill in the dark. Anyone else made the switch away from dawn starts or am I missing something?
