I finally stopped trusting GPS on the High Sierra Trail
Last August I was doing the segment from Crescent Meadow to Bearpaw, about 11 miles. My phone said I was right on trail but I kept seeing these orange ribbons off to my left, which felt wrong. Turns out a creek had washed out a bridge and the route got rerouted two years ago, the GPS still showed the old path. I ended up scrambling up a rocky slope for an hour before a couple of hikers flagged me down and pointed me to the new crossing. Now I always print a physical map and check the ranger station bulletin before I head out, even on trails I've done before. Has anyone else hit a dead end because their mapping app was showing an outdated route? What do you do when the blazes and the screen disagree?
