Got caught in a hailstorm on the way up to Lake Blanche, do you bail or push through?
Last August I was 2 miles from the trailhead when golf ball sized hail started coming down and I had no cover, so I hid under a pine tree for 40 minutes and got soaked. My buddy says you always turn back when weather hits, but I think if you've got the gear and the storm passes, you keep going. Where do you draw the line on a route when the sky opens up?
Watched a guy get struck by lightning near Emerald Lake two summers back, which scared me straight about storms up high. He lived, but his hair was singed and he was shaking for an hour. Golf ball hail is no joke either, that stuff will crack your skull open if it hits right. If the storm is building and you can see lightning, get down. If it's just hail and rain and it's already passing, hunker down and keep moving once it clears. Your buddy isn't wrong but he's not right either, it depends on what the sky is actually doing.
