Beware the sneaky creek crossing at Three Forks, it nearly took my pack last Tuesday
I was out on the Three Forks loop in the Smokies, you know the one that crosses the creek about 2.5 miles in. The water looked low, maybe ankle deep, so I thought I was fine. But there's this current that runs under a big flat rock, and it pulled my right foot sideways. I went down hard, pack went under, and I had to grab a root to keep from rolling downstream. Cost me an hour drying out my gear and a busted phone screen. The trail maps don't mark that spot as dangerous, but the ranger at the visitor center told me they've had three rescues there this season. Has anyone else hit a crossing that looked easy but wasn't? How do you check for hidden undercurrents before you step in?
