My old shop swore by heat guns, I switched to a $40 soldering iron and never looked back
Everyone at my last hangar in Tulsa told me heat shrink with a heat gun was the only way to do wire repairs right, but I picked up a cheap soldering iron with a heat tip and the joints come out cleaner with way less melted insulation. Six months in and I have had zero comebacks on those repairs. Anyone else ditch the heat gun or am I the odd one here?
Man, I feel you on that one, dealing with the old heads who act like there's only one way to do things gets old fast. If it's working and holding up on your repairs that's all that matters.
If it's working and holding up on your repairs that's all that matters, yeah, and that's the part the old heads never want to hear. Half the stuff they swear by was just what was on the shelf back when they learned it. Times change, parts change, and the guy who refuses to try anything new is usually the same guy who's redoing the same job twice. Long as it holds and the customer ain't calling you back, who cares how you got there.
