That old timer at the salvage yard changed my mind about junkyard parts
I used to refuse to buy anything from pick-n-pull lots, thought it was all rusted junk that would leave me stranded. Then about 6 months ago I was hunting for a blower motor resistor for my 2002 Tahoe near the Knoxville yard, and this older guy in a stained Carhartt jacket saw me squinting at the parts catalog on my phone. He walked over, pointed at a mid-2000s Impala sitting in the back row, and said "that one's got the same Delphi unit, takes 4 minutes with a 7mm socket." I was skeptical, honestly thought he was messing with me, but I grabbed it for $8 versus the $46 the parts store wanted. Thing has worked perfect through the summer and now the cold snap, zero issues. He also showed me how to read the date codes on alternators and starters so I can grab the fresher ones from wrecked cars. Now I hit that yard first for anything electrical, but I still won't touch used timing chains or water pumps. Has anyone else had a random stranger at a salvage yard steer them right?
