Young guys keep torching wheel hubs because nobody taught them to pack bearings by hand anymore
I work at a shop in Bakersfield and I've had three trucks come in this month with burned up spindles. All three guys are under 25. All three used a grease gun on sealed bearings and thought that was the same thing as packing. My old mentor Sal showed me the hand pack method back in 2009 at a shop off Chester Ave, you put a blob of grease in your palm and smack the bearing until it comes out the other side. Takes 90 seconds. These kids are torching spindles because they never got taught, they just watched a 4 minute video. The worst one was a 2016 F250, guy spent $800 on parts and the thing was back in my bay 6 days later. Now when I hire a lube tech I make them pack one by hand before they touch a rack. Anyone else seeing this? Did your shop stop teaching the basics or is it just here?
