After 3 winters of dirty slush streaks on my Civic, I finally tried rinsing with warm water first
I park on a salt covered street in Cleveland so my white Civic gets destroyed every winter. Last Saturday I filled a bucket with warm water and a capful of soap, rinsed the whole car before touching it, then washed like normal. The slush slid right off and I barely used any soap, maybe 2 ounces total. My neighbor does mobile detailing and he said cold water just smears the salt around instead of lifting it. Does anyone else use warm water in winter or am I risking my clear coat?
Three winters of that brown salt spray caked on the side of my Corolla in Buffalo, so I know the pain. The warm water thing makes sense to me because salt needs water to dissolve and warm water does it faster, plus it starts lifting the grime before your mitt drags it across the paint. Your neighbor is right about cold water too, it mostly pushes the slush around and leaves that gray film behind. The clear coat worry is real but a little warm water from a bucket is not going to hurt anything, it is not like you are pouring boiling water on frozen glass. Just do it in the shade if you can and do not let it sit and dry on the paint, and you should be fine.
