The parts guy in Tulsa told me 87 octane was fine in my 400cc and I almost believed him
Two summers ago I was topping off my quad at a station off I-44 in Tulsa and the kid behind the counter swore 87 was all anyone needs, so I ran it for about 40 miles of trail and the thing pinged and stumbled under load going up a rocky climb. I drained it right there in the driveway, refilled with 91, and it ran clean the rest of the trip, so now I just pay the extra buck a gallon and skip the argument. What octane are you all actually running in your air cooled motors, and has anyone here had a knock show up that later turned into real damage?
My buddy did the same thing on his old Honda, ran 87 all spring to save a few bucks, and by August it was burning oil and down on power. Turned out the pinging had been chewing up the top end the whole time. For what it costs to fix that, he could've bought premium for like ten years.
