Used to call a guy for my gutters, now I do it myself after he wanted $275
I used to just pay a guy to clean my gutters twice a year, it was easy and I didn't think about it. Last fall he quoted me $275 for my little ranch house near Decatur and I just couldn't do it. So I bought a $40 gutter scoop from the hardware store and did it myself on a Saturday. Took me about two hours and I filled half a trash bag with wet leaves and shingle grit. The weird part is I found a loose downspout bracket he never mentioned in 3 years of "service." Now I check them myself every time it rains hard and I actually know what's going on up there. Curious if anyone else has a price that finally pushed them to just do it themselves?
That line about finding a loose bracket he never mentioned in 3 years really sticks with me. It makes me wonder what his "service" actually included, because if he was up there twice a year and never caught that, was he really looking or just scooping and leaving? A loose bracket is a small fix, but it can lead to water running down the side of your house and rot behind the siding, which is way more than $275 to fix. Doing it yourself means you spot that stuff early instead of finding out the hard way after a storm. The price is what got you started, but the real win is knowing your own house.
