Rant: everyone swears by foam sealant but it wrecked my crawl space fix

Overheard a guy at the Home Depot in Decatur telling someone to just spray foam every gap around their foundation. I tried that last spring on a 30 foot section and it trapped moisture something fierce. Six months later I had rot on the sill plate and a bigger bill than if I'd hired a pro to do it right. People treat foam like a cure all but in Atlanta's humidity that stuff does more harm than good. Anyone else had foam sealant backfire on them? What do you use for air sealing down here?
