Sort of hit 500 deep sky photos in my catalog and it felt like a weird milestone

I kept shooting nebulas and galaxies for years without counting, then one day I realized I had 500 saved. It mattered because it showed me how much patience and cloudy nights I actually put into this hobby.

Do you really feel like counting them makes it more meaningful? I get why it would feel like a milestone, but for me, keeping track takes some of the fun out of it. I have probably taken just as many if not more over the years, but I never bothered to count. The best part for me is just looking back at old shots and seeing how much I improved, not the number of them. Plus, half my "great" shots came from nights I almost gave up and went inside, so the real achievement is the patience, not the count.

Half my best shots came from nights I almost packed it in too.

Half your great shots coming from nights you almost gave up? That blows my mind honestly. I have maybe 3 or 4 images I truly love in my whole portfolio, and thinking about how close each one came to not happening makes me kind of queasy. There was this one sunset at Cannon Beach last winter where I literally had my camera packed up and was walking back to the car when the sky just exploded with color. I barely got a single frame off before it faded. If I had been 30 seconds faster leaving, I would have missed it entirely. It really makes you wonder how many potential masterpieces we walk away from without ever knowing.
