Update: I changed my mind about group projects after hearing a manager in Dallas explain how she hires
I always hated group projects in school because I did most of the work and got the same grade as the kid who showed up twice. Last week I was waiting for a delayed flight at DFW and overheard a hiring manager on her phone say she looks for one thing on a resume: whether the person can point to something a team built and say exactly which part was theirs. That one line made me rethink the whole thing. Turns out the project itself was never the point, it was learning to say what you did without tearing down everyone else who touched it. I went back through my old college docs and realized I could name my part in 4 out of 5 projects but not one single thing anyone else contributed. That feels like a real gap and I am not sure how to close it now that I am 8 years out of school. Has anyone here learned to get better at talking about shared work without sounding like they are either taking all the credit or none of it?
