Serious question, my uncle told me to skip the paint primer on my garage door and now it's peeling after 5 months

He said primer was a waste of $30 and the paint would stick fine on bare metal. Anybody got a fix that doesn't involve stripping the whole thing again, or do I just eat the cost?
