PSA: My "quick" printer fix turned into a 6 hour nightmare

Last Tuesday I tried to swap a toner cartridge in our office's main printer and the stupid thing wouldn't recognize it no matter what I did. After 3 hours of reseating, cleaning contacts, and even rebooting the print server I finally googled the error code and found out the firmware needed an update. Has anyone else had a simple maintenance job turn into an all day project for no good reason?

Wait, hold on, did you actually say you were rebooting the print server? That's a major step for a toner swap, you jumped straight into the deep end. I'm honestly a little shocked you didn't just check if the printer had a little 'update firmware' button somewhere in its stupid little menu screen first. Most of those office printers will nag you with a little pop-up warning for days before a firmware update is even needed, so you could have caught it way earlier. I've seen people spend hours on a jam only to find out they were using the wrong paper weight, but this takes the cake for jumping to the nuclear option way too fast. For real, that six hour rabbit hole should have been a thirty minute call to the IT guy who gets paid to deal with that nonsense.

Six hours for a toner swap sounds like you went down a rabbit hole that was mostly self inflicted. I mean, did you check if the toner was actually the right model for that printer before you started? Half the time people grab the wrong cartridge and then spend hours chasing software ghosts. And firmware updates, yeah those can be a pain, but a full workday? Seems like you could have just called IT support after the first hour and been done with it. Sometimes the quick fix is just accepting you need help instead of trying to be the hero.
