Had a weird convo with my dad about his old vinyl collection

We were cleaning out his garage last weekend and he pulled out a box of records from the 70s he hasn't touched in years. He said he stopped buying music after 1985 because 'the feeling changed' and it hit me how much the way we listen has shifted. Does anyone else ever talk to older folks and realize you're basically living in a totally different world than them?

My grandpa went through the same thing when we found his cassettes. I stopped pushing back once I realized he wasn't trying to argue about sound quality, he was just telling me about his life. Ended up asking him what concerts he went to and he lit up for two hours straight. Now I rip his old records to my phone so he can hear them in the car, which he secretly loves even if he acts grumpy about it. Getting them to share the stories behind the music is way better than arguing about why they stopped buying it.

The 80s thing is kinda funny actually because a lot of people think music died after the 70s but there was some killer stuff after 85. My dad says the same thing about vinyl though, he claims records sound "warmer" which I guess is true but also I think he just misses being young and having that experience. The way we listen is totally different now with streaming and algos picking everything for us but old heads had to really hunt for music which made it feel more special I bet.
