I always looped the twine tight around the main stem and knot it right against the stake, and every August my plants would get these pinched brown bands right at the tie point. A vendor selling starts in Asheville saw me doing it last spring and asked why I was strangling them, then showed me his figure 8 wrap that leaves the stem room to grow. Has anyone else been clipping or tying tight without thinking about it, or is this just something I never got taught?
