Of course your twelve year old map failed you, that thing probably still thinks the Metro stops at 2am and Ballston is just a parking lot. It's funny how a random stranger at a bus stop knows more about your own neighborhood than an official map does. At this point just ask the guy to draw you a new one by hand, it'd probably last longer.
