Saw a guy using a metal detector at a known Civil War site last weekend
I was hiking around the old battlefield near Fredericksburg on Saturday and watched some dude with a Garrett 300 just digging holes wherever he got a beep. No permit, no grids, nothing. How do we even stop this kind of damage to historical ground?

Ha! Yeah sure they are. I've seen guys with metal detectors out there digging first and asking questions never. One dude posted a video of himself pulling a civil war buckle out of the ground and his first thought was "this will look great on ebay." Not exactly the Indiana Jones approach to preservation. I get that some people are careful and report stuff, but let's be real - the ones who actually call archaeologists are probably outnumbered 10 to 1 by the ones who just want treasure.
